Welcome to the temporary web site for the Association of Thai Ridgeback Owners & Fanciers.

Cecilia & Bruiser,

America's 1st Thai Ridgeback Service Dog.

We are the only club recognized by the AKC-FSS for the Thai Ridgeback Dog in the United States of America.

We hope that you find everything that you need to know about this magnificant breed.

So you think you want to own/buy a Thai Ridgeback?  Here are some points for you to ponder:

  • Good with children (like most dogs, if they're properly socialized & introduced).

  • Primitive breed – evolved from the Asian wolf. Only been in US since 1994; have prick ears (natural like the German Shepherds). Primitive paw pads, pigmentation on their tongues, some have solid black tongues or spots on their tongues. Four colors, Red, Black, Blue & Yellow. Males range between 45-55lbs.

  •  Independent thinkers!!!!!

  • Used as sentry dogs, carting dogs as well as hunting small vermin, cobras, and wild boar.

  • Exceptionally smart - almost too smart for their own good.

  • Can be extreme escape artists – best if kept indoors.

  • NOT the breed for the first time dog owner. Owner needs to be the "Alpha."  Notorious for pushing their limits with their owners.

  • Often like unruly children. They'll push & push, & if you give in just once, they'll take it & run with it.

  • Make wonderful loving companions to people who are Alpha personalities.

  • Tenacious.

  • All about themselves - if it doesn't suit them, they're not doing it. All about survival of the fittest.

  • Best if kept active, & get lots of time to run off their energy.

  • Hate the rain, don't like to be cold.

  • Great hunters of small game – including CATS.

  • Great guard dogs, & very quiet. Not barkers - will only bark if they feel their home/family is threatened.

  • Tend to be one person dogs, but will protect their pack.

  • Exceptionally clean & once house broken, are good to let have run of your home.

  • When they are puppies they will eat your couch, dig your rug, eat your wallpaper, surf your counters, & giving them a bath is like trying to give a cat a bath.  Some enjoy swimming, but most do not.

Not all Thai Ridgebacks are born with the signature ridge, about 20% of all Thai Ridgebacks are born ridgeless, this does not mean that they are not pure bred, and they still possess all of the breed characteristics, accept for the signature ridge.

The breed allows eight different ridge patterns and four acceptable colors: Red, Black, Blue and Yellow.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us, we're more than happy to talk about our dogs, both the pros and the cons of owning or being owned by a Thai Ridgeback.

Please be aware that this is not the breed for everyone, if you are not an Alpha type personality or you've never owned a dog before this will not be the dog for you.
